Loveboat, Taipei

This flow traces how Ever’s separation from dance, attempts to find a studio, and eventual choreography transform dancing from a hidden passion into a chosen vocation and public expression.

Dance at the Edge of Goodbye A brief possibility After receiving the Tisch acceptance, Ever tells Megan that she might audition for an arts scholarship. She dances with the school squad and wonders whether a life of movement could replace the antiseptic corridors of medicine. For the first time, dance appears not only as an extracurricular refuge but as a possible future. Interrupted momentum When Ever’s parents discover the acceptance, they object to dance as unstable and insist that she prepare for medical school. Ever asks only to finish the upcoming parade performance, hiding the scholarship audition because she doubts her family would support it. Her parents instead announce the Taiwan program, and Ever gives up the local performance as she prepares to leave. The thwarted parade becomes an early measure of how much Ever has surrendered before she reaches Taiwan. Dance is still central to her inner life, but she has been trained to describe it as a temporary pleasure rather than a legitimate ambition.

A Body Without Its Practice The denied request Ever’s parents have already chosen Chinese medicine and calligraphy for her program electives. She tries to switch into ribbon dancing, fan dancing, and even stick fighting, but each class is full. When she finally asks the fan-dance teacher directly, she explains that she dances at home and has been unable to go this long without it. Finding a studio Ever searches online for ballet and dance classes in Taipei, but the studios she finds are too expensive. She eventually spots a photograph album for Madame Szeto’s studio at Yannie’s photography shop and travels across the city to ask whether she can join. The modest studio’s summer fees will exhaust her savings, but she accepts the cost in exchange for a chance to dance. Ever’s search is both practical and emotional. She has not stopped loving dance because her parents have discouraged it; instead, distance from it makes the need clearer. She begins to spend her own money on a choice that belongs to her.

The Studio Door Closes A missed chance Ever intends to audition for a solo role in Madame Szeto’s Swan Lake performance. After the emotionally overwhelming weekend at the Zhang residence, she wakes too late and races to the studio hoping Madame Szeto will still let her perform. Instead, Madame Szeto ejects her and shows her a copy of Ever’s nude glamour photograph. A betrayal becomes public Sophie has collected the photograph and delivered it to the studio. Madame Szeto treats it as damage to the students’ reputations and refuses to let Ever return. The photographs turn Ever’s private experiment with her own body into a public judgment, destroying the audition and her fragile place in the studio. The rejection deepens Ever’s sense that every attempt to claim her own desire can be taken from her. Yet the loss does not erase what she learned at the barre or what dance means to her. It changes the form her next opportunity will take.

Building a Performance A new role After her parents threaten to bring her home and The Dragon restricts her activities, Ever turns toward the talent show. She asks Debra and Laura to help build a routine, then recruits other students and shapes their different skills into a dance that brings together fans, ribbons, and jazz movement. Finding the missing structure The initial routine feels like a collection of separate parts. Ever observes the dancers, experiments with transitions, and eventually steps into the work herself, realizing that the performance needs a central figure and a more forceful rhythmic foundation. She brings in a solo and a staged bo fight, using the movement skills she developed through dance squad and practice with Rick. Choreography gives Ever a new way to exercise agency. She is not simply trying to return to the lost audition; she is making an original work that depends on collaboration. Other students recognize the coherence she is building before she can fully trust the word “choreographer” as a description of herself.

The Wanderer A stage earned together Sophie arranges for the Chien Tan talent show to move to the National Theater as a benefit for families affected by the flooding in Taitung. Ever’s new dance becomes the finale. Before she takes the stage, she learns that her father has arrived in Taiwan and is searching for her near Liberty Square. Dance in the open Ever runs into traffic to reach her father when he is knocked into the road, injuring herself as she pulls him to safety. After paramedics attend to them, she invites him to the show. He stays, and watches as Ever performs the dance she created, including the bo-fighting duet with Rick. The audience rises in applause, and her father praises her performance. The performance makes dance public in the most important sense: Ever no longer hides it from the family whose approval she feared losing. The work also supports the typhoon relief fund, giving dance a purpose that aligns with Ever’s compassion and her wish to make people visible.
